Type 3 Sub Base SWH Clause 805

Crushed stone

Type 3 Primary Aggregates – Crushed Granite And Limestone

We supply Type 3 open graded SHW Clause 805 Sub Base. It is a pure crushed stone, ranging in size from 40mm down to dust with a higher percentage of larger sized aggregate, but with a reduced (not zero) fines content.

Type 3 is a sub-base similar to MOT Type 1 but with reduced fines to allow water to free drain as a permeable sub base.  For material to be called Type 3, it must conform to the Ministry of Transport Specification Clause SHW 805. It was previously known as DOT Type 3 (Department of Transport Type 3).

Uses

Available in both granite and limestone, Type 3 Sub Base is widely used as a sub-base material for projects where a higher percentage of larger sized aggregate and a lower fines content is required for improved drainage, and be frost resistant when used 450mm from the surface.

Examples are:

  • Permeable paving on driveways
  • Tennis courts
  • Sports pitches
  • Equestrian arenas
  • Tree root protection systems
  • Hard standings
  • Paths and patios
  • Applications where blockage of drains in an issue with conventional MOT Type 1.

Type 3 is often a more economic option in construction as a top surface can be stripped and replaced without needing to reinstall the sub base, providing it is in good enough condition. This can save a lot of time and money.

What is the weight of Type 3 sub base per m3?

The weight of Type 3 limestone is 1.5 to 2.2 tonnes per m3 depending on the level of compaction.

What is the specification for Type 3 sub base?

Type 3 sub-base is a pure crushed granite, limestone or clean crushed concrete. Usually a 40mm product that has been screened to create a reduced fines aggregate. This product is fully certified according to the Specification for Highway Works. This is the most widely used sub-base where less fines are required. MOT Type 3 is also known as ‘DOT Type 3’ after the Department of Transport (DOT) specification for granular sub-base material and is also the most widely used approved sub-base where SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) is required when constructing permeable surfaces. To be classed as ‘Type 3’ quality the stone must comply with the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works, clause 805 (SHW 805).

The specification for type 3 sub base is issued by the UK Highways Agency. To be classified as Type 3, the material must meet the specifications provided by the Highways Agency.

Price

The prices for type 3 sub base can vary according to the exact mix and quantity and of course the site location. Recycled aggregates are sometimes cheaper than primary aggregates, but it is essential to obtain the correct aggregate for your construction project. Because we are always competing on price, we don’t have a type 3 cost calculator available online, but please do contact us for further information.
