Type 1 sub base limestone

Type 1 sub base limestone

We supply Type 1 quarried primary aggregate to the Highway Agency’s Specification. We also supply recycled Type 1 and Type 3.

It is widely used as a sub-base in the construction of roads, car parks and pathways. It’s a well-graded material sized from 63mm to dust, but with most of the material sized at 31.5mm to dust. Available both as a limestone or a granite.

Type 1 SHW Clause 803 (Specification for Highway Works) is often known MOT Type 1 or DOT Type 1.

What is type 1 sub base material?

Sub-base material is produced by crushing either limestone or granite rock. It is used to spread the load on areas which bear heavy traffic, such as roads and pavements.

Type 1 sub base aggregate

Graded Type 1 sub base

The sub base is a load-bearing layer of aggregate laid on the sub-grade layer below and is the main load-carrying layer of roads and pavements. Since the sub base distributes weight over a wide area, it provides a very stable layer which reduces sinking and settling of the highway surface. Because it is comprised of a particles complying to a grading of 63mm solids to dust, the particles form an interlocking mesh with few air spaces in between, providing a very robust structure.

It should be frost-resistant when used within 450mm of the surface.

Often the top surface can be stripped and replaced without needing to reinstall the sub base, providing it is in good enough condition. This can save a lot of time and money.

What is the weight of type 1 sub base per m3?

The weight of Type 1 limestone is 2.2 tonnes per m3 (compacted).

What is the specification for Type 1 sub base?

The specification for type 1 sub base is issued by the UK Highways Agency. To be classified as Type 1, the material must meet the specifications provided by the Highways Agency.

Can Type 1 be used for patios?

Type 1 sub base can be used for patios and driveways. However, please note our minimum order quantities of 10 bulk bags or 10m3.

Price

The prices for type sub base 1 can vary according to the exact mix and quantity and of course the site location. Recycled aggregates are sometimes cheaper than primary aggregates, but it is essential to obtain the correct aggregate for your application. We currently don’t have a type 1 cost calculator available online, but please do contact us for further information.
